The city of Mesa is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Phoenix in Maricopa County, Arizona. With a population of just over 460,000 residents, Mesa is the third largest city in Arizona behind Phoenix and Tucson. Even though Mesa is primarily a bedroom community for larger cities in Maricopa County, Mesa has a population that is higher than more recognizable cities such as Cleveland or Miami. Mesa is the largest US city that is not considered a city-county or county seat.
Since 2000, the population in Mesa has increased by almost 13.5%. Although Mesa is one of the faster-growing cities in Arizona, it is unlike other cities with similar populations inasmuch as Mesa does not have many skyscrapers; actually there is only one, the Bank of America building near Fiesta Mall. This gives Mesa a more suburban feel and offers residents unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. This is one of the reasons why Mesa is such a popular bedroom community for other, more metropolitan cities in Maricopa County.

Though Mesa is primarily a suburban city, there are plenty of things to do here. There are numerous parks and open spaces where folks can practice field sports, jog or ride bicycles. The City of Mesa Parks and Recreation Department also offers several location offering programs of all types for all ages. There are several shopping malls in Mesa including the Fiesta Mall and Superstition Springs Center. These retail centers offer a variety of shopping options including Dillard’s, Macy’s, Sears, JCPenney, Best buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Home Sleep Home Furniture. There is also a new outdoor retail center named Mesa Riverview which features Bass Pro Shops, Home Depot and Wal-Mart as well as a movie theater and restaurants.
Real estate in Mesa is comprised of apartments, condos, townhomes, single-family detached homes and luxury homes. The average cost of a single family home in Mesa is $131,970.
